CERTIFICATION BY THE ROUNDTABLE ON SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL

New Britain Palm Oil Limited (NBPOL) is a large-scale integrated industrial producer of palm oil in Australasia and is headquartered in Papua New Guinea (PNG). It is regarded as being at the forefront of sustainable and ethical palm oil production. The company is listed on both the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange and the Port Moresby Stock Exchange in PNG.

NBPOL's core activity is the cultivation and processing of Oil Palm into Crude Palm Oil (CPO), Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) and Palm Kernel Expeller (PKE) for sales to both domestic and foreign markets. NBPOL is also one of the world's largest private seed producers.

NBPOL places a very high value on achieving the highest standards of environmental management and sustainability on each part of its palm oil operations. NBPOL has complete control over its seeds, harvesting, milling, refining, transportation and shipping, therefore it can trace individual shipments to the European Union back to source; vital to proving the sustainability of its oil.

Delivering sustainable and ethical palm oil production

NBPOL’s environmental management system was audited and verified as being ISO 14001 compliant in 2004 and it was successfully re-certified in 2007.

The company spearheaded an international organisation seeking to improve the sustainability credentials and practices of the palm oil industry, the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The RSPO has over 260 members, of which 12 are non-governmental organisations (including WWF and Oxfam). NBPOL's Head of Research, Dr Simon Lord, is Vice President of the RSPO.

In September 2008, NBPOL’s operations in Papua New Guinea were officially certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil as conforming to RSPO Principles and Criteria on sustainability. NBPOL is one of the first companies to be certified and the first producer of palm oil to achieve this standard for smallholders, which account for approximately one third of NBPOL’s total palm oil production.

NBPOL's RSPO certification underlines the Company's full compliance with strict social, environmental and economic criteria. With all of its operations RSPO certified, NBPOL is now in a unique position to deliver 100% certified sustainable palm oil into Europe and, more importantly, will allow it to supply its own UK refinery once this has been completed.
