Cattle

The cattle herd is located at Numundo, where NBPOL's integration of beef cattle with oil palm was started in 1998. It replaced the previous unprofitable system of grazing cattle under coconuts. This beef production system is known as the "Numundo Half Stand System" and involves the rotational grazing of cattle in a half stand of oil palm and sole pasture areas. This is believed to be the first system of its kind in the world, which allows the sustainable growth of both oil palms and cattle on a constant area of land throughout the entire production cycle of the oil palm. The Numundo Half Stand System is a vertically integrated beef production operation from breeding through to retail.

This integration operation is focusing on maximising profitability while providing a means of diversification. It also adds value to the Palm Kernel Cake, an oil palm by-product, which forms the main ingredient of the cattle's diet and supplies an alternative protein source to the region.
