NBPOL has four processing mills located at Mosa, Kumbango, Kapiura and Numundo. Kumbango also has a Palm Kernel Crushing Mill, Refinery and Fractionation Plant plus a small packaging operation.
Mosa Oil Mill was the original oil mill, commissioned in 1971, but extensively modified and expanded from 25 tonnes of FFB per hour to the current capacity of 55 - 60 tonnes per hour. It is not viable to expand this mill further but it remains a vital asset and has processed over 40% of the crop since the project started. Improvements in efficiency and environmental aspects are planned. Kumbango Oil Mill followed 10 years later, necessitated by the expansion in plantation area. Starting at 20 tonnes per hour capacity it was rapidly expanded to 30 tonnes per hour in 1983 and latterly to 40 tonnes per hour.
Kapiura Oil Mill was commissioned in 1990, after another 10-year interval, serving a separate plantation area some 60 kms from the Mosa/Kumbango group. It was the largest Oil Mill at 60 tonnes per hour and largely designed and constructed in-house. Many new features particularly in fruit handling were introduced.
Numundo Mill, also a complete in-house project was completed and commissioned in 2001. It is designed as a 40-80 tonnes per hour mill with the second phase planned for 2005. Further simplification in fruit handling was achieved combined with a "world - first" zero effluent discharge process in conjunction with a compost production facility.
Kumbango Refinery and Fractionation Plant were commissioned in 2003 with a capacity of 300 tonnes per day of crude palm oil and will process about half of the crude palm oil produced in the company. While refined product is exported the local market is already taking 10% of the refined product as mainly cooking oil, but also some stearin for a soap factory. |
